We mourn the passing of Dr. Ghada Hijjawi
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Ghada Hijjawi-Qaddumi, President of World Craft Council International (WCC-AISBL). A Kuwaiti national, Dr. Ghada served as the President of World Crafts Council-Asia Pacific Region until 2020, and she was the President of the WCC-International (AISBL) for the term 2021-2024. She has a PHD on history of Islamic Art and Architecture from Harvard University, and also studied at the American University of Beirut and Lebanese American University. She will be always remembered for her dynamic personality, exuberant energy and dedication to the cause of handicrafts and craftspeople since 2004. During her long career, Dr. Ghada has successfully served as the director and curator of several noteworthy museums. We had the good fortune to witness her incredible passion, unceasing interest and fortitude during the Jamdani Festival (organised jointly by the National Crafts Council of Bangladesh and the Bengal Foundation) in Dhaka in 2019. Had it not been for her zeal, it might have taken much longer for Sonargaon (Narayanganj) to achieve the status of a World Craft City. Bengal Foundation’s inclusion in the WCC-APR as a national entity member is also the result of her foresight. We humbly recall her generosity of spirit. As we deeply mourn the passing of this extraordinary soul and celebrate her achievements, we will miss Dr. Ghada’s unfailing grace and her wise counsel.
