Visual Arts

Since its inception Bengal Foundation has always recognised art as an essential part of our culture. The Foundation’s Visual Arts programme has undertaken several initiatives to promote, nurture and encourage its practice by organising talks, exhibitions, film screenings, art workshops and residencies, alongside publishing books, catalogues and folios.

In the year 2000 Bengal Foundation launched the Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts, the first commercial gallery in Dhaka. From there, the Foundation went on to establish the SM Sultan Bengal Art College in south-west Bangladesh in 2011. The Bengal Art Lounge was introduced as the second commercial gallery in 2012, followed by the Safiuddin-Bengal Printmaking Studio – which presently includes a space for collaborative shows – in the same year. The following year, the Foundation launched the Daily Star-Bengal Arts Precinct in 2013 as a platform for emerging artists.

Abul Khair’s own acquisitions combined with the Foundation’s collection has created an art repository of over 5,000 works by modern painters from the region.

By 2016, the Visual Arts programme seemed to have fulfilled its initial mission of introducing existing and potential art enthusiasts to a certain echelon of art and bridging the gap between them and the artists. In the natural course of its evolution, the programme has moved away from the commercial aspect of art to focus its efforts on being a platform for nurturing young and prospective artists, as well as highlighting the modernist legacy of Bangladesh.

Upheavals Sunday 26 March to Sunday 9 April 2017 by at Park Gallery

'Upheavals' is an exhibition that explores contemporary Bangladesh through the eyes of eight Bangladeshi artists of three generations. It examines the ambiguous power of change through three generations of artists from Bangladesh. The notion of transformation carries a potent paradox, one that pits the aspiration – where the old can be subsumed in a new, bettered state – against the sinister – through which what initially was is either destroyed or ...
