“NO ONE HOME”, a solo exhibition of installations, drawings and videos by TAYEBA BEGUM LIPI at BENGAL ART LOUNGE – Saturday, 5 December 2015 to Saturday, 9 January 2016.
Bengal Art Lounge is delighted to announce the upcoming inauguration of “No One Home”, an exhibition of installations, drawings and videos by Tayeba Begum Lipi, on Saturday 5 December at 6pm. Social activist Khushi Kabir, and HE Dr. Thomas Prinz, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Bangladesh, will jointly inaugurate the exhibition.
Tayeba Begum Lipi’s first gallery show in Bangladesh since 2007, “No One Home” presents a series of objects of women daily life made of safety pins and stainless steel razor blades: heeled shoes, hand bags, a sewing machine, a bathtub… Displayed in a gallery space, these personal objects create a feeling of hollow intimacy for their owner is nowhere to be seen. The viewer is left with the strange impression of peering through an empty apartment: the lights are on, but there is no one home.
The use of stainless steel razor blades has been a long-standing practice for the artist, and has become over the years her signature technique. In a witty endeavor, Tayeba Begum Lipi assembles artworks with sharp material originally conceived to cut and tear apart. Although metallic blades are commonly associated to a masculine use, the artist further adds to the paradox by creating  feminine and delicate objects. For the Tayeba Begum Lipi, razor blades are further associated with the feminine by vivid childhood memories. Coming from a very large family where a newborn was frequently expected, she has clear recollections of blades being sanitized in boiling water and then used by mid-wives to separate the child from the mother. The blade thus becomes a symbol of women’s strength and resilience.
The exhibition also showcases series of pencil drawings representing skin and hairs under various forms. Alluding to the aging process and its physical consequences on the body, these poignant works deal with womanhood, transition and ultimately with mortality; issues that are both very personal and of universal concern. The vicissitudes of time are further explored in 2-channel video in which the artist is seen cleaning up her ancestors’ graveyard on the family property. This work delves on the tension between what is and what was, inviting the public to introspection.
“No One Home” is a remarkably coherent exhibition in which Tayeba Begum Lipi continues to explore the themes that have long haunted her – the nature of womanhood, the place of women in society, the ephemeral nature of life – in a characteristically candid endeavor. Bengal Art Lounge is extremely proud to present this exhibition to the public.

About the artist:
A versatile visual artist who indifferently uses media as diverse as painting, drawing, video, constructed objects and installations, Tayeba Begum Lipi (b. 1969, Gaibandha) is renowned for her sharp observations of, and vigorous comment on Bangladeshi society. In the video “I wed myself” (2010) for example, Lipi played both the role of the bride and the groom on a wedding-stage, therefore questioning the construction of gender and the precise roles it assigns to individuals. The various objects (bras, blouses, shoes, hand bags…) she makes of stainless steel razor blades refer to femininity while offering a stark contrast with the usual material these articles are made of. Both visually compelling and thought provoking, these artworks raise questions of the representation of women and the place they have in society. Tayeba Begum Lipi’s seminal artistic practice has installed her as one of the most recognized living Bangladeshi artist. She was the commissioner for the first ever Bangladeshi pavilion at the 2011 “Venezia Biennale dell’Arte”, and her work “Love Bed” was acquired in 2013 by the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum (New York, USA). Tayeba Begum Lipi is currently preparing with her husband and fellow artist Mahbubur Rahman a major retrospective of their works on the theme of “The Artist as Activist” at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum (Michigan, USA).

সংবাদ বিজ্ঞপ্তি আজ শনিবার, ৫ ডিসেম্বর ২০১৫ সন্ধ্যা ৬টায় বেঙ্গল আর্ট লাউঞ্জে (৬০, গুলশান এভিনিউ, রোড ১৩১, গুলশান সার্কেল ১, ঢাকা-১২১২) শিল্পী তৈয়বা বেগম লিপির “নো ওয়ান হোম” শীর্ষক মাসব্যাপী একক প্রদর্শনীর উদ্বোধন হয়েছে। অনুষ্ঠানটি যৌথভাবে উদ্বোধন করেছেন সমাজকর্মী খুশী কবির এবং বাংলাদেশ ফেডারেল রিপাবলিক অফ জার্মানির রাষ্ট্রদূত ডক্টর থমাস প্রিঞ্জ। ২০০৭ সালে শিল্পী তৈয়বা বেগম লিপির বাংলাদেশে অনুষ্ঠিত সর্বপ্রথম একক প্রদর্শনীর পর, ২০১৫ সালে তাঁর “নো ওয়ান হোম” শীর্ষক প্রদর্শনীতে থাকছে নারীদের দৈনিক ব্যাবহার্য জিনিসপত্র যা স্টেইনলেস স্টিল রেজর ব্লেড দিয়ে তৈরীঃ হিল জুতা, হ্যান্ড ব্যাগ, সেলাই মেশিন, বাথটাব ইত্যাদি। গ্যালারী স্পেসে প্রদর্শিত এই ব্যাবহার্য জিনিসপত্রগুলো তৈরী করে এক অদেখা ঘনিষ্ঠতার যা কিনা দৃষ্টিগোচর নয়। দর্শক এক অদ্ভুত অনুভূতিতে সিক্ত হন – মনে হয় যেন তারা এমন একজন মানুষের বাড়িতে এসে উপস্থিত যেখানে আসলে বাড়ির মালিকই উপস্থিত নেই – সবগুলো লাইট জ্বালানো, কিন্তু বাড়িতে আসলে কেউ নেই। স্টেইনলেস স্টিল রেজর ব্লেড দিয়ে কাজ শিল্পীর অনেকদিনের চর্চা এবং বর্তমানে তা তাঁর সিগনেচারে পরিনত হয়েছে। রসাত্মক কিংবা ব্যাঙ্গারথকভাবেই শিল্পী কাজ করেন তীক্ষ্ণ ধাতব মেটিরিয়াল দিয়ে যা কিনা আপাত ধর্মে কোন কিছু কেটে ছিঁড়ে ফেলতে ব্যাবহার করা হয়। এইসব মেটিরিয়াল খুব বেশীভাবে ব্যাবহার করে পুরুষরা। শিল্পী আপার্তবৈপরীতা তৈরী করে এই মেটিরিয়াল দিয়ে নারীর নিত্য ব্যাবহার্য জিনিসপত্র তৈরী করে। কিন্তু শিল্পী লিপির জন্য রেজর ব্লেড এমন একটি বস্তু যা তাঁর দেখা ছোট্ট বেলার স্মৃতির জগতে নারীত্বের সাথে ওতপ্রোতভাবে জড়িয়ে আছে। এমন এক পরিবার যেখানে নতুন প্রজন্ম বারংবার প্রত্যাশিত – তেমনি এক পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন শিল্পী তৈয়বা বেগম লিপি এবং তিনি তাঁর ছোটবেলায় দেখেছেন গরম পানিতে ব্লেড ফুটিয়ে নিয়ে তা ব্যাবহার করা হয় জন্মের পর মায়ের সঙ্গে নবজাতকের নাড়ি কাটার কাজে। এভাবে তাঁর কাছে ব্লেড হয়ে ওঠে নারীত্বের এক শক্তি ও স্থিতিস্থাপকতায়। এই প্রদর্শনীতে আরও প্রদর্শিত হচ্ছে শরীরের বিভিন্ন স্থানের চামড়া ও চুল এর থীমে আঁকা পেন্সিল ড্রয়িং। বয়স বৃদ্ধির সাথে সাথে নানান পরিবর্তন এবং শরীরের ওপর তাঁর প্রভাব – বাহ্যিক ও শরীরগত এই বিষয়গুলো মানবজাতির নশ্বরতার প্রতীক – যা একেবারেই ব্যাক্তিগত কিন্তু সার্বজনীন। সময়ের এই উত্থান পতনকে শিল্পী চিত্রায়িত করেছেন তাঁর একটি ভিডিও শিল্পকর্মে – যেখানে দেখা যায় শিল্পী তাঁর পূর্বপুরুষের কবর পরিষ্কার করছেন। এই শিল্পকর্মটি দর্শকের মনে চাপা উত্তেজনার সৃষ্টি করে – কি ছিল আর কি আছে তাঁর মধ্যবর্তী এক অবস্থানে পৌঁছে দেয় দর্শককে। “নো ওয়ান হোম” শীর্ষক এই প্রদর্শনীতে দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে শিল্পীর মনে যে ভয়ের বিচরণ তারই অন্বেষণ করে গিয়েছেন তিনি – নারীত্বের চরিত্র, সমাজে নারীর অবস্থান, ক্ষণস্থায়ী জীবন – গুনগতভাবে অকপট প্রচেষ্টা। বেঙ্গল আর্ট লাউঞ্জ অত্যন্ত গর্বিত এই প্রদর্শনীটি দর্শকের সামনে উপস্থাপন করতে পেরে। শিল্পী সম্পর্কেঃ বহুমুখী প্রতিভার অধিকারী শিল্পী, তৈয়বা বেগম লিপি (জন্মঃ ১৯৬৯, গাইবান্ধা) কাজ করেন নানান ধরনের ভিন্ন ভিন্ন মাধ্যমে; যেমন – পেইন্টিং, ড্রয়িং, ভিডিও, তৈরি করেন নানাবিধ অবজেক্ট, ইন্সটলেশন্স ইত্যাদি। শিল্পী লিপি অসংখ্য সুনাম অর্জন করেছেন নানান সময়ে বাংলাদেশী সমাজে বর্তমান নানান বিষয় সম্পর্কে তাঁর তেজস্বী ও বিচক্ষণ নিরীক্ষণের কারণে – উদাহরণস্বরূপ বলা যেতে পারে তাঁর “আই ওয়েড মাইসেলফ” (২০১০) নামক ভিডিও আর্টওয়ার্ক এর কথা যেখানে যায় যে তিনি বর ও কনে উভয় চরিত্রে অভিনয় করেছেন একটি বিয়ের মঞ্চে বসে – সমাজে লিঙ্গ নির্মাণ এবং লিঙ্গভেদে নারী ও পুরুষের ওপর কি করে কর্তব্য বর্তায়ন করা হয় তা দর্শকের মনে প্রশ্নের উদ্রেক করে। স্টেইনলেস স্টিল রেজর ব্লেড দিয়ে লিপি মেয়েদের ব্যাবহার্য নানান অবজেক্ট (অন্তর্বাস, ব্লাউস, জুতা, হাত-ব্যাগ ইত্যাদি) তৈরী করেন যা হাজির করে এক বৈপরীত্যের, সাধারনত এই জিনিসপত্রগুলো যা দিয়ে তৈরী হয় তাঁর সাথে। এই অবজেক্টগুলো ভিজ্যুয়ালী আঘাত হানে এবং তারই সাথে দর্শকের মনে চিন্তার ও উদ্রেক করে এবং সমাজে মেয়েদের প্রতিরূপ ও অবস্থান সম্পর্কে প্রশ্ন উত্থাপন করে। শিল্পী তৈয়বা বেগম লিপির ধাতব শিল্প-চর্চা তাঁকে প্রতিষ্ঠিত করেছে ও স্বীকৃতি দিয়েছে অন্যতম বাংলাদেশী শিল্পীদের তালিকায়। তিনি সর্বপ্রথম কমিশনপ্রাপ্ত বাংলাদেশী শিল্পী যিনি ২০১১ সালে ভেনিস বিয়েনালের বাংলাদেশ প্যাভিলিয়নে তাঁর কাজ প্রদর্শন করেছেন; ২০১৩ সালে তাঁর “লাভ বেড” শীর্ষক শিল্পকর্ম সুপ্রতিষ্ঠিত সলোমন গুগেনহাইম মিউজিয়াম (নিউ ইয়র্ক) কর্তৃক সংগৃহীত হয়েছে। শিল্পী তৈয়বা বেগম লিপি এবং তাঁর স্বামী শিল্পী মাহবুবুর রহমান – তারা বর্তমানে একত্রে কাজ করছেন “আর্টিস্টস এস এক্টিভিস্ট” বিষয়ে যা প্রদর্শিত হবে এলি এন্ড এডিথ ব্রড আর্ট মিউজিয়াম (মিশিগান, ইউ.এস.এ) তে। “নো ওয়ান হোম” – এ প্রদর্শনীটি আগামী ০৯ জানুয়ারী ২০১৬ পর্যন্ত প্রতিদিন দুপুর ১২টা থেকে রাত ৮ টা পর্যন্ত খোলা থাকবে। শিল্পী তৈয়বা বেগম লিপির সাক্ষাৎকারের জন্য যোগাযোগ করুনঃ [email protected] / +8802-9895135। ধন্যবাদান্তে প্রকৌশলী মাহজাবিন হক (রথী) ঊর্ধ্বতন কর্মকর্তা বেঙ্গল আর্ট লাউঞ্জ যোগাযোগঃ ০১৭১৫১৩৫২০৯
