Jhuma Khandaker

Ms. Jhuma Khandaker (Sharmistha) is a promising vocal artist of Bangladesh. Born in Sylhet in 1973, she is the daughter of Liberation War Photojournalist Nishit Purkayastha and folk artist Chanda Purkayastha. Basically a Tagore artist, Ms. Sharmishtha took music lessons from well-known gurus such as Mr.Waheedul Haque, Dr. Sanjida Khatun, Ustad Pt. Ramkanai Dash in Bangladesh and Dr. Pt. Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, Maya Sen, Bulbul Sengupta, Sumitra Sen, Dr. Sunit Basu and Swapna Ghoshal (Geeta Bharati) in India. She completed her M.A. in Rabindra Sangeet from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata under ICCR Scholarship. Presently, she is a teacher in the Department of Rabindra Sangeet at the Chhayanaut Biddayatan, Dhaka.

A gifted artist, Ms. Sharmistha received the National Award (best Tagore artist) in Rabindra Sangeet from Rabindra Sangeet Sammilan Parishad in 1991. She is an enlisted vocal artist of Bangladesh Betar and BTV. She has also participated in many stage shows and youth festivals organized by national & international organizations.

Ms. Sharmistha has released several music CD albums. Her most popular music CD albums are Neel Aakasher Niche (modern songs) released by Nibedon; Bedon Banshi (Tagore songs) by Laser Vision and Aji Nutana Ratane (songs of Atulprasad Sen, Rajanikanta Sen and D.L. Roy) by Bengal Foundation.
