Bengal Foundation mourns the passing of Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan.

He was one of the most celebrated Sarod artists in Bangladesh. Born in Comilla in 1958, he belonged to a family of renowned musicians. He was the only son of Ustad Abed Hossain Khan, grandson of Ustad Ayet Ali Khan and Ustad Alauddin Khan, and nephew of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Ustad Bahadur Khan. At the age of seven he began taking sarod lessons from his father, and later became a disciple of his uncle Ustad Bahadur Khan. Khan obtained the degree ‘Vadya Alankar’ in music from Ali Akbar College of Music, California. He also earned a Master of Arts degree in History from Dhaka University. Khan has performed extensively in Bangladesh and abroad. He was honoured with numerous awards and accolades throughout his career including the ‘Ekushey Padak’, the Highest National Award of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, in 1994. He was also a Member of the Advisory of Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay.

Khan passed away on Saturday, 28 November 2020, at the age of 62. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, students and fans from around the world.
