A silver lining for Bangla Cinema : BCDF announces film plans and projects

Bengal Cinema Development Forum (BCDF) began its journey in 2013 to promote young filmmakers with the potential to usher in a new era in Bangladesh’s cinema. As a step in that direction, BCDF invited scripts from filmmakers, and after rigorous selection has zeroed in on five scripts which will be commissioned soon. The finalists are Ratan Paul for the feature film ‘Ismailer Ma’, Syeda Nigar Banu for the film’Nona Pani’, Adnan Kabir for the film ‘Eti Palash’, Ashutosh Sujan for the film ‘Opekkha’ and Humaira Bilkis for the documentary ‘My Long Road to School’. The names were announced by the honourable Minister for Information Mr. Hasanul Haque Inu, MP, at a simple ceremony held at Bengal Cafe, in Road 27, Dhanmondi, on 1 March 2015. A large number of film enthusiasts, young filmmakers and  a section of the press were present at the event. The speakers felt strongly that the induction of young filmmakers in the industry and giving them a much-needed platform, would surely revitalise the dormant industry. It was generally felt that as a cultural initiative, the Young Filmmakers Project would inject great hope among the youth.

BCDF has, in the meantime, worked closely with the producer, Bengal Entertainment, to publicize, distribute and promote the company’s first film ‘Meghmallar’, by Zahidur Rahim Anjan. The film, based on a story by Akhtaruzzaman Elias, has been acclaimed for its stunning cinematography and unconventional approach.
