Vision of the Past
In the series presented in the exhibition, human figures were prominent, lines were minimized and figures marked by a simplicity that allowed a direct interaction with the viewer. Karim retained his love of symbols but these were often muted.
Monsur Ul Karim (b. 1950, Rajbari) received an MFA from the University of Chittagong in 1974. Notable among his awards are the Swadhinata Dibas Puraskar of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Government of Bangladesh (1977), Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award at the 11th National Art Exhibition (1974), Honourable Mention Award in the 4th National Art Exhibition (1978), Bata International Prize (1981), Grand Award in the 6th Asian Art Biennale, Bangladesh (1993), Grand Award in the 8th Indian Triennale (1994), and the Ekushey Padak (2009). Karim’s works have been exhibited widely. He is a Professor in the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Chittagong.
