Truth, Beauty and Me
Sharmeen’s work shows both a modernist preoccupation with time, flux, the loss of a centre, the disappearance of faith and a romantic concern for beauty, truth, imagination and solitude. Her composition, in its visual arrangement, stresses on the interaction between space and form, and occasionally, textured surfaces emerge to indicate a gradual unfolding of her thought. The exhibition displayed a series of works showing her recent shift towards the philosophical and the sublime. Certain recurring motifs in her work – the snake, withered leaves – are suggestive of her dual themes of evil and death. Other motifs such as the boat, fish and the kash flowers are, however, evocative of the power of life. Laila Sharmeen (b. 1964, Dhaka) did her master’s from the Institute of Fine Arts, Dhaka in 1990. Her works have been exhibited widely at home and abroad. She received the Purchase Prize at the 16th Space International Print Biennial, Seoul, in 2011.
