Shikare Mauna Natak
In a world that is increasingly denaturalized, alienated and dichotomized; Ferdousy’s art refreshes a sense of our essential connectedness to, and unity with, nature. With a touch of her artistry, ordinary, often discarded objects such as roots, branches, trunks, reed, coconut fibre and shells, come to life in ingenious manifestations of delight, humour and playfulness. The transformed images are expressive and striking, as if they were lying dormant, waiting to be revealed. Artist SM Sultan is said to have remarked: Ferdousy talks to her plants! Her close associates and friends truly believe that plants seek her out first. She listens to them–every gnarled root seems to have a story to tell. Through minimal intervention she can persuade dead and rotting wood to live on as pieces of art. Ferdousy was born in Khulna in 1948. A social and cultural activist, she is a war hero of the Liberation War of 1971. Ferdousy received the Ekushey Padak in 2009. Bengal Foundation made an 16 min documentary on Ferdousy Priyobhashini titled Shikare Mauna Natok (directed by M A Pallab) in 2003.
