The Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts hosted a twelve-day long solo exhibition of artist K M A Quayyum titled, ‘Sensation Within’ with the inaugural ceremony on Friday, 24 July 2009, at 6:30 pm at Bengal Shilpalaya. Eminent artist Qayyum Chowdhury was present as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the exhibition. Mr. Shamsuzzaman Khan, Director General, Bangla Academy, and noted artist Hashem Khan were present as special Guests.

In Sensation Within K M A Qayyum depicted an imaginary world of abstract formations and unfamiliar imagery. Done mostly in vivid colours and subtle tonal effects, the works unfold a realm of soothing beauty and formal grandeur. Given his predilection for objects in nature- especially the flora and fauna- Qayyum delves deep into their microscopic details. Executed mostly in pen and watercolour on paper, there emerges in his paintings a complex relationship between form and space. Qayyum (b. 1952, Brahmanbaria) did his BFA from the Bangladesh College of Arts and Crafts in 1973 and MFA from the University of Chittagong in 1975. He received the Best Award in the Life in Bangladesh Exhibition organized by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (1976), Best Award in the Independence Day Art Exhibition organized by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Govt. of Bangladesh (1978), Best Award at the 7th Young Artists Art Exhibition in Dhaka (1975) and the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award at the 12th National Art Exhibition (1996). He is currently teaching in the Institute of Fine Arts, Chittagong.

সত্তরের দশকের শিল্পী কে এম এ কাইয়ূম এ দেশের চিত্রকলায় যে অমিত সম্ভাবনার বীজ রোপণ করেছিলেন তা ক্রমে উৎকর্ষ অর্জন করেছে। প্রতিনিয়ত কাজ করার ফলে তাঁর সৃজনভূমি সমৃদ্ধ হয়েছে এবং শিল্পকুশলতায় এসেছে ধীশক্তি। চতুর্পার্শ্বের দৃশ্যজগৎকেই তাঁর চিত্রে রূপায়ণ করেন তিনি। তিনি নিত্যনতুন উপাদান যোগ করে তাঁর সৃজন-ঐশ্বর্যকে বেগবান করেছেন। কিন’ সেই চিত্রায়ণে প্রত্যক্ষ বাস্তবতা ও বির্মূততার অনুষঙ্গ নেই। শিল্পীর অভিজ্ঞতালব্ধ এক বোধ নিয়ে তাঁর জগৎ নির্মাণ করেন। যে জগৎ শিল্পীর নিজস্ব জগৎ। শিল্পীজীবনের প্রাথমিক পর্যায়ের কাজে রোমান্টিক আবেশ প্রাধান্য বিস্তার করলেও অনুভূতি ও সংবেদনের তীব্রতা সামপ্রতিক সৃষ্ট চিত্রগুচ্ছে উপেক্ষণীয় নয়। এই প্রদর্শনীতে তাঁর অনুভূতিময়, ব্যঞ্জনধর্মী, সংবেদনময় ও ছন্দোময় কিছু কাজ আছে। এই কাজগুলোয় শিল্পীর সৃজন ভাবনা যে কত গভীরতা আশ্রয়ী সে কথা খুব সহজেই উপলব্ধি করা যায়। রং ব্যবহারের ক্ষেত্রেও তিনি স্বতন্ত্র। তাঁর রঙের বৈশিষ্ট্যই শিল্পীকে শনাক্ত করে। তাঁর প্রজন্মে তিনি বিষয়ে, প্রকাশে ও উন্মোচনে সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন আদল ও অবয়ব নির্মাণে ব্রতী। এই চিত্রগুচ্ছই তার উজ্জ্বল দৃষ্টান্ত।
