Rhythms of Figures, Forms and Nature

Abdur Razzaque (b. 1932, Shariatpur –d. 2005, Jessore) was a distinguished student of the second batch of the Government Institute of Art (1954) who played a pioneering role in the development of the modern style of painting in Bangladesh. He was the first Bangladeshi to obtain a master degree in art from the US. Razzaque was concurrently a painter, a printmaker and a sculptor. The retrospective showcased selected works of Abdur Razzaque, spanning fifty years of work. Razzaque’s notable commissions include the 150 sq. ft. mural at the International House, Iowa City (1956), the 10 ft. high Shaheen for Bangladesh Air Force (1972), the 42 ft. high war memorial for Bangladesh Army at Joydevpur, an 18 ft. by 13 ft. mural for Bangladesh Bank office at Rajshahi. Abdur Razzaque received the Ekushey Padak in 1989. His career was studded with awards, citations and honours. A 72-page brochure, 24-page folio and the film Garaner Gahine have been published by Bengal Foundation to mark the exhibition.
