Nature and Life

A joint initiative of the ICCR Rabindranath Tagore Centre and Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts, Farida Zaman’s exhibition provided art enthusiasts in Kolkata a first hand experience of some of her recent works. ‘Nature and Life’ reaffirmed Farida’s power of reconstructing a narrative in which life’s little moments are endowed with great feeling. A couple travelling in a rickshaw, Sufia having a slice of watermelon or a woman picking flowers – these simple images are celebratory and resonate with a silent power that defies the cacophony of life. Farida (b. 1953, Chandpur) received a doctorate degree from Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, in 1995. She received the Young Artists Award (Gold Medal) at the 4th Young Artists Art Exhibition, Dhaka, in 1979, the Commendation Award at the 5th India Triennial in 1982, the Australian government’s Cultural Award in 1985 and the International Life Membership Award of the Salon de Tokyo, Japan, in 1986. She is a member of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka.
