Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts hosted a twelve-day solo exhibition of eminent Indian artist Sanat Kar titled, ‘Lyrics of Line’ with the inaugural ceremony on 3 April 2009, Friday, at 6 p.m. at Bengal Shilpalaya. National Professor Kabir Chowdhury was present as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the exhibition. Prof. Rafiqun Nabi, Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, was present as the special guest. Artist Sanat Kar was also present at the ceremony.

Sanat Kar’s (b. 1935, Kolkata) figurations have an innocence and poeticism. A dreamlike quality pervades his work. It is in his texturisations that he achieves great mastery. The shimmering colors, grainy surfaces, the mottled, scratched, doodled lines create their own visual magic. Lyrics of Line brought together thirty-five of Kar’s watercolours.

Sanat Kar is a recipient of the Kala Vibhushan National Title Award (1997), the Siromani Puraskar (1996), the West Bengal State Lalit Kala Academy Award (1993), the International AIFACS Prints Exhibition, New Delhi (1984) and the Gagan Abani Award (2005). He retired as Professor and Principal of the Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, in 1995, and now lives and works in Kolkata.

সনৎ কর গত শতাব্দীর পঞ্চাশের দশকের মধ্য পর্যায়ে কলকাতা আর্ট কলেজ থেকে শিক্ষা শেষ করার পর ধারাবাহিক চিত্রচর্চার মধ্য দিয়ে নিজেকে একজন সৃজনশীল চিত্রকর হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। তাঁর সাবলীল রেখার গতিময় ছন্দের এক ভুবন তাঁর সৃজনভূমিতে বিশিষ্ট হয়ে ওঠে। প্রথমদিকের কাজে রোমান্টিকতা এবং পরাবাস-বতার কিছুটা ছাপ থাকলেও পরবর্তীকালে তিনি তা পরিহার করেন। নারীর অবয়ব-নির্মাণের শৃখলায় তাঁর দ্বিমাত্রিক সৃজন-উৎকর্ষ এক গীতিময় ব্যঞ্জনা সৃষ্টি করে। চিত্রনির্মাণের বিশিষ্টতা এবং অবয়বগঠনের এই দ্বিমাত্রিক বোধসৃষ্টিতে পারদর্শী হয়ে ওঠায় তিনি ভারতবর্ষের শিল্পানুরাগীদের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণে সমর্থ হন এবং ভারতবর্ষে সমকালীন একজন প্রভাবশালী চিত্রকর হয়ে ওঠেন। ষাটের দশক থেকেই তিনি কাঠখোদাইয়ের কাজে কিছু পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা করেন। তাম্রতক্ষণ ও উড ইন্টাগলিওতে তিনি নতুন নিরীক্ষায় একমাত্রা সঞ্চার করেন। উড ইন্টাগলিওর রঙ ব্যবহারে তাঁর অনায়াস দক্ষতা রয়েছে। দীর্ঘদিন থেকে তিনি বিশ্বভারতীর কলাভবনে শিক্ষকতা করেছেন। অগণিত ছাত্র তাঁর সৃজন-উৎকর্ষে উদ্দীপিত হয়েছেন। বর্তমানে তিনি বিশ্বভারতীর এমেরিটাস অধ্যাপক।
