Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts hosted a twelve-day long solo exhibition titled, ‘Inauspicious Time’ by artist Atia Islam Anne with the inaugural ceremony on 12 June 2009, Friday at 6 p.m. at Bengal Shilpalaya. H. E. Ms. Ingebjorg Stofring, Ambassador, Royal Norwegian Embassy, was present as the Chief Guest and inaugurate the exhibition. Prof. Rafiqun Nabi, Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka and art critic Prof. Abul Mansur were present as Special Guests.

Anne’s paintings are strewn with images and symbols such as dolls, masks, caged birds, hijabs, burqas, microphones. She pursues a metaphorical language to signify loss, depravity, displacement and oppression. Sometimes her paintings are brutal narrations but even in that directness there lies a moment of reflection and awe.
Anne (b. 1962, Dhaka) did an MFA from the Institute of Fine Arts, Dhaka, in 1985. She received the First Prize in the Junior Red Cross National Art Exhibition in 1976. Anne is associated with a number of social and cultural organisations. She has participated in many international exhibitions and workshops. She is currently teaching at the Jhapi School of Art.

আতিয়া ইসলাম এ্যানির ছবিতে অস্থির এই সময়ের হৃদয়যন্ত্রণা শিল্পকুশলতায় উঠে এসেছে। আছে প্রচলিত সমাজব্যবস্থার বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিবাদ, ঘৃণা ও ক্রোধ। কৌতুকের আভাসও পাওয়া যায় তাঁর চিত্রে। সমাজে নারীর অবস্থানকে তিনি সুক্ষ্মভাবে তুলে ধরেছেন কোনো কোনো পটে। বাংলাদেশের নারীরা কতভাবে যে বঞ্চিত ও শোষিত হচ্ছে তারও বর্ণনা আছে তাঁর সৃজনে। এমনকি অ্যাসিড নিক্ষেপের ফলে যে নির্মমতার স্বীকার হচ্ছে নারী, তারও সুন্দর প্রতিফলন আছে। এখানে তাঁকে মনে হয় প্রতিবাদী ও জীবনবাদী। আতিয়া ইসলাম এ্যানি এক শক্তিমান চিত্রী; সমকালীনদের মধ্যে সমাজ অঙ্গীকারের ধরন ভিন্ন বলে বিশিষ্টও বটে। দেশের সমকালীন জীবনের নানা ঘটনাবলি তাঁকে স্পর্শ করে। এই ঘটনাবলি মহুকাত্রিক। বঞ্চনা, শোষণ ও মানবিক বোধ লঙ্ঘনের কথা সেজন্য উঠে আসে চিত্রে। এই বহু বিষয়কে অবলম্বন করে তিনি তাঁর সৃজনধারাকে সমৃদ্ধ করে চলেছেন। সমজের কপটতা, অসঙ্গতি ও বেঁচে থাকার সংগ্রামের চিহ্নবহ তাঁর চিত্রবলিতে সময় ঘুরেফিরে তাঁর শিল্পীসত্তাকে বলীয়ান করছে। সময়ের দহনকে ধরবার জন্য এই যে উন্মুখতা তা এই চিত্রীকে করে তুলেছে জীবনসন্ধানী।
