First Light
GMB Akash’s photographs express a range of emotions, sentiments and methodology. From poignant to comical, thought-provoking to light-hearted, each black and white image stands on its own. Akash’s passion for photography began in 1986. He attended the World Press Photo seminar in Dhaka for 3 years and obtained a BA in Photojournalism from Pathshala. His work is regularly featured in over 20 international publications. In 2002 he became the first Bangladeshi to be selected for the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass in the Netherlands. In 2004 he received the Young Reporter’s Award from the Scope Festival in Paris, again the first Bangladeshi to receive the honour. In 2005 he was awarded Best of Show at the Center for Fine Art Photography’s international competition in Colorado in USA. In the wake of his World Press Photo award of 2006, he received numerous international awards and distinctions. First Light, a book of 26 black and white photographs by Akash, was launched during the exhibition. The book was designed by Laura Bonapace and edited by Reena Abraham.
