Ecology of Mind-2
Alak’s early terracotta work showed his predilection for installation-like arrangements and a sharp eye for detail. His site-specific sculptures reveal an intimate understanding of the ‘spirit of the place’. In ‘Ecology of the Mind’ Alak Roy (b. 1950, Mymensingh) highlighted the fractured state of our existence which he believes could heal, once our connection with nature is restored. Alak graduated from the Bangladesh College of Arts and Crafts, Dhaka (1973), and did an MFA from the M S University, Baroda, India (1978). He won the Best Sculpture Award in the Young Artists Exhibition (1979), Honourable Mention Awards in the 8th, 9th and 12th National Art Exhibitions (1987-1996), and in the 3rd Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh (1985), the Grand Award in the 4th Asian Art Biennale (1989) and the Beijing Olympic Landscape Sculpture Award (2006). Alak has participated in many residencies, symposiums and workshops, all over the world and has a number of commissioned works to his credit. He is now a Professor in the Department of Fine Arts, University of Chittagong.
