Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts hosted a twelve day solo art exhibition titled, ‘Colours of Nature, Rhythm of Life’ by artist Gulshan Hossain with the inaugural ceremony on October 30, 2009, Friday at 6 pm at Bengal Shilpalaya.
H. E. Mr. Arturo Manuel Perez Martinez, Ambassador of Spain to Bangladesh, was present as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the exhibition. Eminent artist Qayyum Chowdhury and Prof. Rafiqun Nabi, Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, were present as Special Guests. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Deputy Managing Director, BRAC Bank Limited, was present as the Guest of Honour.

In her 12th solo exhibition, two of Gulshan’s perennial concerns came together- nature and life. The fine balance her paintings achieve between thought and feeling, contemporary concerns and timeless contemplation, restores our faith in nature and ourselves. Most of the forty odd paintings featured in the show were done in mixed media. The twenty prints – photoetchings, monoprints, silkscreens and collographs – were done in England during her study there. These were mostly small, intense pieces, with the theme of Bangladesh’s war of liberation being an important presence. Gulshan (b. 1962, Jessore) received her master’s from the Winchester School of Art, UK, in 2008. Notable among her awards are the Dipa Haq Award at the 17th National Art Exhibition, Bangladesh (2007), the 2nd prize in the 26th and the 28th International Miniature shows in Florida, USA (2003, 2001), the Honourable Mention Award in the Sharjah Biennial, UAE (2005). Gulshan teaches in the Department of Painting in the University of Development Alternatives, Dhaka.

শিল্পী শুধু মানব সম্পর্কের মধুর মিতালি আর নিসর্গের স্বপ্নিল আবেশ চিত্রিত করেন না। জীবনের চরম দুঃখের ঘটনাও তার হৃদয়ে অনুরণন তোলে। মনের ভেতরে সেই কম্পন থেকে জন্ম নেয় ভিন্ন ধরনের সৃষ্টি। প্রকৃতি ও মানব সম্পর্কের সুখী অভিব্যক্তি আঁকার পাশাপাশি শিল্পী গুলশান হোসেন তার জীবনে দেখা স্বদেশের সবচেয়ে করুণ, দুঃসহ রক্তাক্ত ঘটনা ১৯৭১ গভীর অভিনিবেশে অবলোকন করেছেন। এ শিল্পীর চৈতন্যে একটা সময় পর্যন্ত বর্ণিল প্রকৃতি মায়াজাল ছড়িয়ে রেখেছিল। বেঙ্গল গ্যালারি অব্ ফাইন আর্টসের এ প্রদর্শনীতে আমরা শিল্পীকে নতুনভাবে অনুভব করব। গুলশান হোসেন এখন এক নিরীক্ষাধর্মী শিল্পী। আবিষ্কার করে চলেছেন তিনি চারুকলার ভিন্ন ভিন্ন মাধ্যমের শক্তি ও সম্ভাবনা। এমনকি পেইন্টিংসের মধ্যেও তিনি সুতোর জাল আর পলিথিন যুক্ত করেছেন আবেগের বেগকে বিশেষ অভিব্যক্তি দেয়ার জন্য। এচিং, কোলাগ্রাফ ইত্যাদি প্রিন্টমেকিংয়ের করণকৌশল প্রয়োগে এক দিকে শিল্পী আমাদের সুপরিচিত অনেকগুলো ফটোগ্রাফ নতুন ব্যঞ্জনায় প্রকাশ করেছেন, অন্যদিকে ধাতব পাতে কড়ি ও কোমল রেখার যোগসাজশে নিসর্গ ও স্মৃতিভার মনটাও মুদ্রিত করেছেন।
