Alluvial Dream & Reality
In his 64th solo, Kalidas chose to focus on contemporary social realities of Bangladesh. The people of the alluvial delta, display in abundance, the essential qualities of detrital clay and silt–it is soft when wet but hard as rock when dry. His style focuses on harmonizing and amalgamating disparate elements–living objects, elemental symbols, totemic or tantric emblems, found objects etc. Kalidas was a member of the Jury at the First Islamic World Contemporary Art Biennale held in Tehran in 2000. He received a Purchase Award at the International Art Exhibition, Osaka (1996). Other awards include medal in Oil Painting in the All India Youth Festival in Kolkata (1968), Best Awards in the International Biennale de L’estamp (1984) and the CROUS Gallery International Exhibition (1984). He received 5 medals for outstanding work from the Asia and Pacific Museum, Warsaw, in 1978. In 2007 Bengal Foundation produced a 48 min film titled Portrait of an Alluvial Artist (directed by Morshedul Islam), on Kalidas Karmakar.
