A Splendid Tradition: Dhamrai Metal Craft

Dhamrai is one of the main centres of metal casting in Bangladesh. For many generations, villages in this area have produced ‘handmade’ metalware using tools that are more than 2000 years old. These items include brilliantly executed statues, decanters and utensils. The craft was all but wiped out in the face of uneven competition with factory made goods. To help rescue the trade the American Cultural Center of the US Embassy, Dhaka, took the leading role in working with the metal casting community and devising ways of reviving the craft. This led to the organisation of a ten day metal crafts exposition. On this occasion, a DVD of the documentary film The Metal Craft of Dhamrai was launched by the US Embassy.
