বেঙ্গল আর্টস প্রোগ্রাম নিবেদিত ‘বাংলাদেশের লোকশিল্প – চিত্রিত মৃৎশিল্প’ প্রদর্শনী শুরু হয়েছে গত শনিবার ২৯ জুলাই ২০২৩, লেভেল ১, বেঙ্গল শিল্পালয়ে। অধ্যাপক নিসার হোসেনের গবেষণা ও নির্দেশনায় প্রদর্শনীটি রূপায়িত হয়েছে। বাংলাদেশের বেশ কিছু জেলায় বর্তমানে কোথায় কী হচ্ছে তার তথ্য এবং মৃৎশিল্পের নিদর্শন প্রদর্শনীতে উপস্থাপন করা হয়েছে। প্রদর্শনীর সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ ঐতিহাসিক মৃৎপাত্র, যা বিভিন্ন ব্যক্তিগত সংগ্রাহকের কাছ থেকে সংগ্রহ করা। আমরা আশা করছি, এই প্রদর্শনীর মধ্য দিয়ে নানা বর্ণ, আকৃতি ও অলংকরণে উজ্জ্বল বিপন্নপ্রায় মৃৎশিল্পের বিপুল বৈচিত্র্য ও শৈল্পিক ব্যঞ্জনা দর্শকের সামনে তুলে ধরা সম্ভব হবে।
প্রদর্শনীর উদ্বোধন অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন মানবাধিকারকর্মী, সংগ্রাহক ও কারুশিল্প গবেষক ড. হামিদা হোসেন। বিশেষ অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন শিল্পাচার্য জয়নুল আবেদিনের কনিষ্ঠ পুত্র ময়নুল আবেদিন এবং বাংলাদেশ জাতীয় কারুশিল্প পরিষদের সভাপতি চন্দ্র শেখর সাহা। অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তব্য রাখেন অধ্যাপক নিসার হোসেন।

এই আয়োজন সকলের জন্য উন্মুক্ত।

প্রদর্শনী চলবে কামরুল হাসান প্রদর্শনশালায় (লেভেল ১, বেঙ্গল শিল্পালয়) ২৩ সেপ্টেম্বর পর্যন্ত, রোববার ছাড়া প্রতিদিন বিকেল ৪টা থেকে রাত ৮টা পর্যন্ত।

The exhibition Bangladesher lokoshilpa – Chitrito mritshilpa/ Painted Traditional Terracotta Artefacts comprises dolls, toys, tools and implements, decorative pots, and votive objects, from private collections, as well as artefacts found in local fairs across Bangladesh. It is dedicated to all artisans and craftspersons who have so lovingly preserved the heritage of painted terracotta, despite many odds.
Bangladesh has a rich heritage of performing arts and craft that has traditionally served as a means of livelihood for a sizable number of rural communities, but the continuity of such traditions is at stake. However, as Prof. Nisar Hossain notes, ‘on the surface it would seem that handmade terracotta crafts have been brushed aside in the face of ubiquitous plastic goods, but the ground realities are slightly different. One would be surprised to note that there is a thriving local market for terracotta artefacts, the demands of which, craftspersons often have to struggle to meet. The ways in which artefacts are produced in the present day, their stylistic preferences, paint application techniques and artistic leanings, have all undergone change in the face of shifting tastes and market needs, but the craft itself has not disappeared’. In order to better appreciate the intrinsic qualities that have historically informed the artistic excellence of heritage terracotta crafts in Bangladesh, it is important for us to know and understand its trajectory.
The current exhibition brings to light collections from the 1960s, through to the present time. Most of what is on display reflects contemporary practice, while a few pieces can be traced to the 1960s. The show should be able to provide us with a glimpse of shifts and departures in terms of form and content, evolving public taste, as well as the artisans’ investment in the craft.

The exhibits include:
Toys and dolls – from across Bangladesh.
Ghats  – ritual earthen pots.
Shokher hari – decorated earthen pots from Rajshahi, usually meant for carrying sweets and gifts
Laxmi shora – ritual circular terracotta pot-covers that are derived from domestic utensils.
Tools and casts – collected from Faridpur, showing current casting techniques.

It is important to restore the dignity of the ancestral knowledge and skills of rural artisans, so that the artistic excellence that the craft has historically enjoyed, is undiminished. We hope that the array of exhibits will rope in the younger generation. With the availability of new technologies and our increasing dependence on it, we have to seek out new ways to sustain, document, and support, the terracotta crafts tradition in Bangladesh. The exhibition, we believe, will help connect us to our roots. .

The exhibition of Painted Traditional Terracotta Artefacts was inaugurated on Saturday 29 July 2023 by Human rights activist and crafts researcher Dr. Hameeda Hossain. Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin’s son, Mr. Mainul Abedin, and Mr. Chandra Shekhar Saha, President, National Crafts Council of Bangladesh, were present as Special Guests. Prof. Nisar Hossain spoke on the occasion. The exhibition is on view at Quamrul Hassan Exhibition Hall, Bengal Shilpalay, Level 1, House 42, Road 27, Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1209, until September 23, 2023. Free admission, and open to the public, every day from 4 to 8 PM, except on Sundays

অধ্যাপক নিসার হোসেনের গবেষণা ও নির্দেশনায় ‘বাংলাদেশের লোকশিল্প – চিত্রিত মৃৎশিল্প’ প্রদর্শনীটি আয়োজন করতে পেরে আমরা আনন্দিত। বাংলাদেশের বেশ কিছু জেলায় বর্তমানে কোথায় কী হচ্ছে তার তথ্য এবং মৃৎশিল্পের নিদর্শন প্রদর্শনীতে স্থান পেয়েছে। তবে প্রদর্শনীর সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ ঐতিহাসিক মৃৎপাত্র, যা বিভিন্ন ব্যক্তিগত সংগ্রাহকের আনুকূল্যে উপস্থাপন করা সম্ভব হয়েছে। আমরা আশা করছি, এই প্রদর্শনীর মধ্য দিয়ে নানা বর্ণ, আকৃতি ও অলংকরণে উজ্জ্বল মৃৎশিল্পের বিপুল বৈচিত্র্য ও শৈল্পিক ব্যঞ্জনা দর্শকের সামনে তুলে ধরা সম্ভব হবে।
এ প্রদর্শনী সকল মৃৎশিল্পী ও কারিগর, যাঁরা বাংলাদেশের লোক-ঐতিহ্যের একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশকে পরম মমতায় বাঁচিয়ে রেখেছেন, তাঁদের প্রতি উৎসর্গীকৃত।
যে সকল সংগ্রাহক তাঁদের সংগ্রহে থাকা মৃৎশিল্পের দুর্লভ নিদর্শন প্রদর্শনীতে উপস্থাপনের জন্য ধার দিয়েছেন তাঁদের মহানুভবতা আমাদের কৃতজ্ঞতাপাশে আবদ্ধ করেছে।
অধ্যাপক নিসার হোসেনের মূল্যবান গবেষণা ও নির্দেশনার ভিত্তিতেই প্রদর্শনীটি রূপলাভ করেছে। অগ্রজ গবেষক ও সংগ্রাহকদের অবদান তুলে ধরা, মাঠ পর্যায়ে উপাদান ও তথ্য সংগ্রহ, সমসাময়িক সংগ্রাহকদের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ এবং চিত্রিত মৃৎশিল্পের বিপুল সম্ভার সংকলন তাঁর আনুকূল্য ছাড়া কখনো সম্ভব হতো না। তাঁর প্রতি আমরা আন্তরিক কৃতজ্ঞ।
বাংলাদেশে মৃৎশিল্পের সুদীর্ঘ ঐতিহ্য রয়েছে, তবে তা এখন বিপন্ন। শিল্পী কামরুল হাসানের কথায়, ‘হাজার বছরের পুরাতন হলেও সেই শিল্প এবং শিল্পগোষ্ঠীকে বর্তমান অর্থনৈতিক এবং সামাজিক কাঠামোর মধ্যে সম অধিকার ও মর্যাদায় প্রতিষ্ঠা করার পরিকল্পনা গ্রহণের দ্বিতীয় অর্থই হচ্ছে আপনাপন ঐতিহ্যের প্রতি মমত্ব ও শ্রদ্ধাবোধ।’
বাংলার চিরায়ত ঐতিহ্য ও সংস্কৃতির মূল্যায়ন আজ সময়ের দাবি। প্রযুক্তি ও বিজ্ঞানের নানামুখী উদ্ভাবনের যুগে এতিহ্য-সংস্কৃতি রক্ষায় নবীন প্রজন্মের এগিয়ে আসার বিকল্প নেই। এই প্রদর্শনী কিছুটা হলেও আমাদের শেকড়ের টান অনুভব করাবে বলে আমরা বিশ্বাস করি।
