Aminul Islam (1931-2011) was amongst the first generation of artists in Bangladesh. As one of the pioneering members of the modern art movement in the country, his contemporary take, social commitment and ceaseless practice has made significant contributions in broadening the horizons of the practice of art today. Preserving the memory of the great artist, Aminul Islam’s family first introduced the ‘Aminul Islam Young Artist Award (AIYAA)’ in 2013. Managed by Bengal Foundation, the award is given to promising new artists every two years.
Two artists were nominated for the AIYAA 2018 by an independent jury, and will receive the award at a ceremony to be held on Friday, 26 April 2019, 5 PM, at Bengal Shilpalay. The awards will be presented by Prof. Nazrul Islam, art-writer and critic; Mr. Shishir Bhattacharjee, Chairman, Department of Drawing & Painting, Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka; Mrs. Ruby Islam; and Mr. Abul Khair, Chair, Bengal Foundation.
