For the aficionados of Alakesh’s work, his first solo show offered an opportunity to witness the gradual evolution and maturity of his style and technique, and his thematic predilection. Watercolour is Alakesh’s natural forte, a medium he uses with exuberance, speed and versatility. In spite of the fleeting and transparent nature of watercolour, Alakesh can bring out the an expansiveness which only reinforces the earthy feel of his experience. Groomed in the tradition of Zainul Abedin and Quamrul Hassan, Alakesh has mastered the wash technique, and like Zainul, has a deep love for rivers. Alakesh (b. 1950, Jamalpur) graduated from the Government Institute of Arts in 1972. He worked as a graphic designer for many years. He has participated in many group shows but The Forms and Poetry of Nature was his first solo since the one held in Boston, USA in 1981. In 1990 Alakesh participated in an art auction in Harvard University. In 2007 Bengal Foundation produced a 24 min documentary on Alakesh Ghosh, titled Jal Chobi / Water Play (directed by Shabnam Ferdausi).
