Chanchal Mahmood
Chanchal Mahmood is a renowned photographer in Bangladesh. His earnest dedication to the art form for the last 34 years, has helped him achieve high degree of success. Artistic photography is understandably more than just clicking on the shutter- there has to be a unique connection between the eyes and the mind. I have known Chanchal since 1980 and am familiar with his early works. Over time he has evolved into a multi-faceted talent and has displayed a keen eye for details in photographing elements of the landscape, daily life, people- even capturing news. Of particular distinction among his early works is an image titled ‘Unknown Poem’ depicting a middle aged mother carrying her son on her back. Her stance bespeaks a determination to go ahead and face the unknown. The balance and symbolism inherent in the composition makes it a truly memorable artwork. ‘Cry for freedom’ is another such piece where Chanchal depicts a child who is left in chains by his working mother to ensure the child’s safety. Chanchal shot this acutely moving account at an early age. There are many such portraitures and photographic accounts that are at once appealing, sensitive and moving.
In his career, Chanchal has been a pioneer in setting standards for model and fashion photography. His involvement lent a degree of professionalism and credibility to the fledgling fashion industry. His photographs have articulated some of the best models and fashion portfolios in the country .
I wish him a long and successful engagement with his art.
