The Other Voice অন্যস্বর

The Other Voice explores the interconnectedness of women artists through the Bengal Foundation and Abul Khair Collections. Comprising mostly paintings by 35 artists from the early 2000s, the selection reflects a transformative era in Bangladesh defined by shifting socio-political discourse.
While women-only exhibitions risk reinforcing gender-based categorisation, this showcase serves as a necessary intervention against the ongoing lack of visibility for female creators. By juxtaposing established icons with under-represented voices, the exhibition resists a biased canon that has historically sidelined women in favour of their male peers.
The collection highlights the complex ways these artists self-organised and shaped technical and thematic shifts in Bangladeshi art. Ultimately, this exhibition aims to move beyond mere “representation” to challenge how systemic biases define artistic excellence. Given that few of these artists have been the subject of serious monographic research, The Other Voice could be a vital act of recovery and inscription, honouring the diverse histories that have shaped their work and its reception.

You are cordially invited to attend the launch of the exhibition to be held at 5 PM on Wednesday 24 December 2025, at the Quamrul Hassan Exhibition hall, Level 1, Bengal Shilpalay. (House 42, Road 27, Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1209). Artists Nazlee Laila Mansur and Najmun Nahar Keya will speak on the occasion.
