Britto New Media Festival 2009

The practice of New Media Art, both in its historical and current manifestation, is of great importance in its capacity to connect with and reflect upon society’s prevailing high degree of dependency on technology. With a view to exploring new trends in alternative art practice, Britto Arts Trust organised a festival for showcasing videos, digital prints, animations, sound pieces and experimental film by local and international artists. An important sculptor-filmmaker-painter of this genre, Runa Islam’s participation drew a great deal of attention. The international presence included Bani Abidi (Delhi-based Pakistani artist), Sloan Le Blanc (France), Cedric Maridet (Hong Kong), Krishna Murti (Indonesia), Dina Wesser (Germany), Huma Mulji and Surekha (Bangalore, India) and Johan Thom (Johannesburg). Bangladeshi participants included Tayeba Lipi, Mahbubur Rahman, Raihan Ahmed Rafi, Imran Hossain Piplu, Yasmine Kabir, Ronni Ahmmed and Kabir A Masum Chisty. The show included talks by Shaheen Rashid and Ayesha Abraham.
