Dissolved Past and Present

Building with clay and ceramics is a time-honoured tradition in Bengal and is deeply linked to the beliefs, mores and lifestyle of the people. Debashish looked more closely at this connection in his early work. Later his focus shifted to the conflicts of the present and how the people are constantly swayed by shifts in politics and confrontation. For him, the collage of melted and fused materials implies change and describes the continuously evolving relationship between man and nature.
Debashish (b. 1971, Netrokona) graduated in Ceramics from the Institute of Fine Art, University of Dhaka, in 1992. He received the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award in the 17th National Art Exhibition (2007) and has a number of publicly commissioned murals to his credit. He is a member of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka.
