The Enchantment of the Transcedental
In his 5th solo exhibition Nurul Islam (b. 1933, Tangail) presented oils and drawings set in a distinctive style that he developed in the tradition of Zainul Abedin, Quamrul Hassan and S M Sultan. The majority of the displayed works, 85 in all, were paintings executed in mixed media, oil, acrylic and tempera. However, it is in drawings that Islam surpassed himself. His minimal lines and stylized forms together create a direct narrative. Islam belonged to the third batch of students of the Government Institute of Fine Arts in Dhaka. A compatriot of the forerunners of modern panting, Islam’s works have been exhibited in Karachi and Dhaka. He passed away in 2010.
