To discerning viewers in Bangladesh Qayyum Chowdhury is an artist who deserves to be placed squarely in the great tradition of painting set up by masters like Zainul Abedin and Quamrul Hassan. He has also distinguished himself through the excellence of his cover illustrations.
The exhibition comprising Qayyum Chowdhury’s watercolours and drawings, bore testimony to the wealth of subject matter and expanse of his artistic skill. The show marked his 75th birth anniversary. Qayyum Chowdhury (b. 1932, Feni) taught in the Institute of Fine Arts for 35 years and retired as Professor in 2000. He received the Ekushey Padak in 1986. Notable among his numerous awards and citations are the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award (1977), S M Sultan Padak (1999), the Imperial Court Prize of Tehran (1966) and the 1st prize at the National Art Exhibition at Lahore (1961).
