My Country, My Love

Farida Zaman’s calm and composure, both in her personal life and work, is transmitted through a special sensitivity into the compositions and characterizations of her art. She has long dwelled on the simple, uncomplicated imageries of rural life and environment. Her preference for the pastoral is best exemplified by the recurrent themes of fishing nets, cats, the moon and the frail figure of a girl. Farida (b. 1953, Chandpur) graduated from the Bangladesh College of Arts and Crafts in Dhaka in 1974. She did her masters from the MS University in Baroda (1978) and went on to receive a doctoral degree from Visva Bharati, Santiniketan (1995). She received the Commendation Award in the 5th India Triennial (1982), the Australian Government Cultural Award (1985), National Book Center Award (1986), the International Life Membership Award of the Salon de Tokyo, Japan (1986) and the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad Award (2009). Farida is the Chair of the Department of Drawing and Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka.
