Late Bengali Masters
Abul Khair, the founder of the Bengal Gallery and an art aficionado, had the privilege of being tutored in art and culture by the eminent academic, social scientist and man of letters, Professor Abdur Razzaq, who also happened to be his uncle. Professor Razzaq, who was held in high esteem for his learning and wisdom, knew most of the first generation artists, including Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, with whom he had a special friendship. He introduced young Abul Khair to these artists, who took him into confidence and inspired him to start his collection.
Eighty original works of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), Gaganendranath Tagore (1867-1938), Abanindranath Tagore (1871-1951), Nandalal Bose (1882-1966), Jamini Roy (1887-1972), Ramkinkar Baij (1906-80), Zainul Abedin (1914-76), Quamrul Hassan (1921-88) and S M Sultan (1923-94), from Abul Khair’s collection, were shown in the exhibition. The show was dedicated to the memory of Ahram Khair Bishal.
