Dighal brought together two senior painters and four Bangladeshi artists who had settled abroad. The four artists living abroad- Monirul Islam, Shahid Kabir, Shahabuddin and Kazi Ghiyasuddin- have made a niche for themselves in their adopted homes but remain very much a part of the Bengali milieu. An expatriate’s life is a continuous balancing act between the cultural pulls of his new home, and the often contradictory demands placed by different allegiances. His style is often a composite of elements that come together in a continuing process of re-assimilation. For them, growing up in the sixties and seventies, meant among other things, coming under the influence of Safiuddin Ahmed and Mohammad Kibria – the two senior artists whose works were part of the exhibition.
