Nakshi Kantha : Zainul Abedin
To mark the centenary of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin’s birth, Bengal Foundation was pleased to present, with the support of the artist’s family, a series of celebratory events. The Foundation’s celebration of this pioneer of modern art in south Asia and leading figure in the fields of art and culture in Bangladesh was launched with the release of a monograph, ‘Great Masters of Bangladesh: Zainul Abedin’, jointly published by Bengal Foundation and Italian publication house Skira Editore.
In addition, there was an exhibition held at the Bengal Gallery which showcased the paintings by other artists in Zainul Abedin’s family. Bengal Publications also released the Bengali-language book “Zainul Abedin”, by Abul Monsur. Monthly magazine of arts and letters, Kali O Kalam has issued a centenary volume to mark the one-hundredth year since the artist’s birth. Working with the artist’s family, Bengal Foundation is preparing a series of exhibitions that will be shown at the Foundation’s three exhibition spaces in Dhaka.
On the occasion of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin’s birthday, Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts invited the public to the first in this series of planned special exhibitions, which will feature selected Nakshi Kantha from the personal collection of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin.
Mr. Abul Mal Abdul Muhith, Honourable Minister of Finance, Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh was present as the chief guest at the exhibition on Tuesday, December 23 at 6 p.m. Mrs. Jahanara Abedin, the wife of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, was also present at the ceremony as a special guest. The honourable guests jointly inaugurated the exhibition.
