Under Pressure
Printmaking has a strong tradition in Bangladesh. It is practiced widely and seen as a form of high art, where skill is matched with creative talent. It is a challenging, physically strenuous, and somewhat a risky activity, employing the use of toxic materials. But technicalities aside, printmaking is much like cooking – one must adhere to the recipe, without being too rigid allowing serendipity and intuition to add the elusive final touch that makes it all come together.
Under Pressure is a collection of works by the Scholars of the Studio artists who have studied for three months under the guidance of Professor Mahmudul Haque. The exhibition also features works from a group of artists who have completed a ten-day workshop on woodcuts and etchings conducted at the Studio by Professor Rokeya Sultana.
These printmakers are ambitious, influenced, and experimental. They are under pressure, to create something new and unique, and it is a great pleasure to give them the support and opportunity they need in order to do so.
