Metaphor of Agony

Nazlee chooses a subaltern art form from a non-appropriative stand and uses visual story-telling to indicate
feminist morals. Her political orientation manifests itself in vivid, saturated and penetrating colours and a photorealistic
rendition of ordinary people. Their empty gaze, lecherous glance, or the careful avoidance of eye contact,
relates a pathetic story of rampant deceit, manipulation and inequity. Her works are considered satirical by many.
Nazlee (b. 1952, Rajshahi) did a master degree in fine arts from the University of Chittagong in 1974. She retired
as Professor of the Government Art College, Chittagong, in 2010. Her work has been exhibited in many
countries. Nazlee participated in a 3-month Bond Beyond Borders residency at the Sanskriti Pratisthan in New
Delhi, India, in 2001-2002. A 24 minute documentary on painter Nazlee Mansur titled An Allegory of
Self-exploration (directed by Wahid Tarek), was produced by Bengal Foundation in 2005.
