Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts hosted a twelve-day solo art exhibition titled ‘Twilight Zone’ by artist Rezaul Karim with the inaugural ceremony on 8 December 2009, Tuesday at 6 pm at Bengal Shilpalaya. Mr. Ramesh Chandra Sen, Honorable Minister, Ministry of Water Resources, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, was present as the Chief Guest and inaugurate the exhibition. Eminent artist Qayyum Chowdhury and artist Monirul Islam were present as Special Guests.

A chance encounter with a group of art students on the bank of the Brahmaputra, set Rejaul (b. 1946, Sirajganj) on the course of a life-long involvement with art. His student days were wrought with uncertainty as he joined left politics and was often hunted down. At one point however, it became difficult for Rejaul to mingle art and politics. Party dictates for adhering to straightforward realistic art conflicted with his expressionistic leanings. This and many other conditions barred him from putting together an exhibition of his works until the nineties. He has since then, found a language of his own – an abstract expressionism that is delicately balanced between the real and the transient.

শিল্পী রেজাউল করিমের অভিজ্ঞতার দিগন্ত বহুবিচিত্র। তিনি ষাটের দশকের স্বরূপ চেতনাকালে সংশ্লিষ্ট ছিলেন ছাত্র ও সাংস্কৃতিক আন্দোলনে। শিল্পী হিসেবে নিজেকে গড়ে তোলার জন্য ছবি অঙ্কন করেছেন এবং সৃষ্টির বৈভবে কীভাবে শিল্পের সুষমা সঞ্চার করা যায় এ নিয়ে ভেবেছেন। এই সময় একক প্রদর্শনীও করেছেন এবং শিল্পানুরাগীদের মনোযোগ আকর্ষণেও সমর্থ হয়েছিলেন। সে-সময়ে তাঁর ছবির বৈশিষ্ট্য ও সমাজের প্রতি তিনি যে দায়বদ্ধ তার সৃষ্টিতে তা প্রতিভাত হয়েছিল। স্বাধীনতা-উত্তরকালে আমরা বিভিন্ন একক ও যৌথ প্রদর্শনীতে তাঁর সৃষ্টির স্বরূপ যে পরিণত হয়ে উঠেছে তা উপলব্ধি করেছি। বিমূর্ত ও আধা-বিমূর্ত রীতিতে তিনি যে সিদ্ধি অর্জন করেছিলেন দীর্ঘ পথপরিক্রমার মধ্য দিয়ে এসব সৃষ্টিতে তা ধরা পড়েছিল। তিনি যে নিরীক্ষাপ্রবণ ও জীবনবিমুখ নন সামপ্রতিক প্রদর্শনী।
