Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts hosted a two-week long solo exhibition of artist Kalidas Karmakar titled, “Alluvial Diary” with the inaugural ceremony on 15 February 2009, Sunday at 6 pm at Bengal Shilpalaya. Mr. Abul Maal Abdul Muhit, Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Finance, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, was present as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the exhibition. Mr. Abul Kalam Azad, Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Information and Cultural Affairs, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, and H. E. Mr. Suk-Bum Park, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Bangladesh, were present as special guests.

Intensely emotive, Kalidas Karmakar’s work connects with an essence that is primordial. He constructs a world of symbolism, expressions and half-expressions that have engendered the Indic, and more specifically the Bengali ethos. In Alluvial Diary Kalidas focused on harmonising and amalgamating disparate elements, living objects, elemental symbols, totemic or tantric emblems, found objects.
Kalidas (b. 1946, Faridpur) graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in 1969. He has numerous participations in group shows and has exhibited widely all over the world. He trained extensively in India, Japan, Poland and France. Notable among his many citations and awards are Fukuoka Museum Purchase Awards in the second Asian Art Show (Tokyo, 1985) and at the International Art Exhibition (Osaka, 1996). Kalidas was a member of the Jury of the First Islamic World Contemporary Art Biennale at Tehran held in 2000. In 2007 Bengal Foundation produced a 47 min film, titled An Alluvial Artist (directed by Morshedul Islam), on Kalidas Karmakar.

কালিদাস কর্মকারের সৃজনকর্মে আমরা বহুভাবনা ও পরিশীলিত আবেগের স্ফুরণ প্রত্যক্ষ করি। তিনি চিত্রকলার বহু শাখায় বিচরণ করেন। স্বাধীনতা-উত্তরকালে তাঁর বহুমুখীন সৃজনধারা ও সাধনা এদেশের চিত্রকলা আন্দোলনকে সঞ্জীবিত করেছে। আমরা তাঁর সৃষ্টির ফসলে এক কল্পনাপ্রবণ চিত্রীকে সদা আবিষ্কার করি। তাঁর শিল্পিত প্রবণতা মূলত রেখাকে কেন্দ্র করেই আবর্তিত হয়। রেখার সাবলীল গতি নির্মাণ করে ব্যঞ্জনাধর্মী এক আবেগ। সেজন্য অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রেই তাঁর সৃষ্টি প্রতীক সংকেতময় হয়ে ওঠে। তৈলচিত্র, অ্যাক্রিলিক, জলরং, ছাপচিত্র ও মিশ্রমাধ্যমে তাঁর অনায়াস দক্ষতা রয়েছে। এইসব কাজে রেখার সাবলীল ছন্দ এক ভিন্ন জগৎ নির্মাণ করে দিয়ে যায়। তুচ্ছাতিতুচ্ছ বিষয়কে অবলম্বন করে তিনি সৃষ্টিধ্যানে নিমগ্ন হন। কখনো তাঁর সৃষ্টিতে তান্ত্রিক ভাবনারত সুরমূর্ছনা ধ্বনিত হয়। সরাসরি বিমূর্ত নয়, আধা-বিমূর্ত ধারায় তাঁর অবগাহন। নানা প্রতীককে অবলম্বন করে মানুষের জীবনের নানা অভিব্যক্তির প্রকাশ তাঁর সৃষ্টির ভুবনকে সমৃদ্ধ করে। এই প্রদর্শনীর নির্মাণ ও সৃষ্টিতেও বহু ভাবনার প্রকাশ আছে।
