Outstanding among votaries of the Muses, Shafiuddin Ahmed has been unremitting in seeking the profoundest harmonies of form and endeavouring to capture them in line and colour. This reclusive, self-absorbed artist has always stood apart from popular trends and tendencies; consequently, despite his total commitment to art, no solo exhibition of his has hitherto been mounted in his own country.

The first ever one-man show in Bangladesh featuring this solitary figure of our art world has been arranged under the auspices of the Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts to commemorate his 86th birth anniversary. Comprising only drawings, this extraordinary exhibition, titled The Limitless Luminosity of Lines, had its vernissage on Monday, 23 June 2008, at 6 pm, at the Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts.

Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman has kindly consented to inaugurate the exhibition and launch the folio titled Drawings of Shafiuddin Ahmed, published by the Bengal Foundation to coincide with the artist’s birthday celebrations. Professor Mustafa Nurul Islam and artist Qayyum Chowdhury will speak on the occasion to felicitate the artist.

Friends, well-wishers and admirers of Safiuddin Ahmed were welcome to attend and wish the artist a long and creative life.

Exhibition intro: সমকালের অগ্রগণ্য ও শ্রেষ্ঠ শিল্পী সফিউদ্দীন আহমেদের (জন্ম ১৯২২) শিল্প শিক্ষা কলকাতা আর্ট ইশকুলে। তাঁর মানস গঠিত হয়েছে দেশভাগের পূর্বে চল্লিশের দশকে শিল্পের বৃহত্তর পরিমণ্ডলে। এই সময়ের শিক্ষায় রেখার ধীশক্তি, বৈভব ও মর্মকে চিত্রবিদ্যাচর্চায় বিশেষ প্রাধান্য দেওয়া হতো। সেজন্য বাংলাদেশের প্রথম প্রজন্মের যেকোনো চিত্রীর রেখালেখ্যে এর তাৎপর্য বিশেষভাবে প্রাধান্য বিস্তার করে আছে। সফিউদ্দীন আহমেদ কলকাতা আর্ট ইশকুলে অধ্যয়নকালে ড্রইংকে বিশেষ যত্নসহকারে আয়ত্ত করেছেন। সেজন্য সুদূর সাঁওতাল পরগনা দুমকা আর গঙ্গা নদী-তীরবর্তী অঞ্চল তাঁর নৈমিত্তিক বিচরণের ক্ষেত্র ছিল। মানুষ ও প্রকৃতি পর্যবেক্ষণ এবং ড্রইং করার জন্যই তিনি এসব অঞ্চলে নিয়মিত যেতেন। সেই সময় সাঁওতালদের জীবন ও গঙ্গা-তীরবর্তী মানুষজনের নানা অভিব্যক্তিকে
