Prokash Karmakar
Born in Kolkata, 1933.
Education:
Graduated from the Govt College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, 1953.
Numerous solo exhibitions in India and abroad, beginning 1955. Created a stir by holding a street-side exhibition in Kolkata in 1959.
Founding member, Society of Contemporary Artists and Calcutta Painters.
Awards:
Won many prestigious awards, including Lalit Kala Akademi National Award, 1968; fellowship to visit France to study art museums in France, 1969-1970; Rabindra Bharati University Award Kolkata, 1970; Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, 1976; AIFACS Award, 1996; Abanindra Puraskar, Government of West Bengal, 2000.
Present occupation: Fulltime artist. Lives and works in Bally, Howrah.
