Origins of Fruits

Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts hosted a twelve-day solo painting exhibition titled, ‘Origins of Fruits’ by German resident artist Onil Hossain with the inaugural ceremony on 22 December 2009, Tuesday, at 6 pm at Bengal Shilpalaya. Mr. Promode Mankin, Honorable State Minister, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, was present as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the exhibition.

Onil’s paintings of fruits present a lush sensibility that transcends the borders of classical still life studies. The indulgent proportions and curvaceous surfaces are ascribed with a sensuality that bespeaks human bonding with the earth’s indulgent fertility. The fruits, flowers, landscapes and ornaments appear smooth and photo-realistic. The atmosphere is surreal with the deliberate use of excess colour, larger-than-life dimensions, and corresponding ornamental motifs.
Onil Hossain (b. 1968, Dhaka), a Bangladesh-born German artist received his degree from the Ecole des Beaux Art in Paris. Later he trained in fashion design and video photography. He is a teacher and runs the Onil Gallery in Germany.
