Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts hosted a twelve-day solo exhibition of the works of Indian artist Dipali Bhattacharya, under the title, ‘A Shifting Weave of Memory’ with the inaugural ceremony on 5 March 2010, Friday, at 6 pm. Dr. Abdur Razzaque, Honourable Minister, Ministry of Food and Disaster Management, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the exhibition. H. E. Mr. Rajeet Mitter, High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh was present as the Special Guest.

Dipali Bhattacharya’s paintings are peopled by the portraits of long-vanished individuals; men and women in formal dress; families posed for a classic group portrait; young women in oval frames, captured in a mood of lively anticipation tinged with anxiety about an uncharted future. Each painting is situated in a burnished, sepia-tinted dreamscape compounded from architecture, intimacy and vistas drawn from a grand colonial metropolis that is changing inexorably, alternately failing into stately decrepitude. Fragments of text float across her painted surfaces. The viewer is intrigued and captivated by these haunting, allusive, strongly cadenced snatches of phrase, song or conversation.
Dipali (b. 1952, Kolkata) graduated from the Govt. College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta, in 1974. She has participated in numerous workshops, art camps and international group shows. Her work has been widely exhibited. At the time of the exhibition she was the Principal of the Govt. College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata, India.

দীপালি ভট্টাচার্যের সামপ্রতিক কাজে উন্মোচিত হয়েছে বিবর্ণ স্মৃতির নানা অনুষঙ্গ। তিনি স্মৃতির ঝাঁপি থেকে এ তুলে এনেছেন। প্রকরণে চিত্র ঐতিহ্যের ছোঁয়া আছে। তাঁর এই সৃজনে ধরা আছে শহর কলকাতা এবং চেনা কিছু নারীর দৃষ্টি ও অবয়ব। এখানে বিষাদ যেমন আছে, তেমনি পাওয়া যায় নৈর্ব্যত্তিক এক অভিব্যক্তি। অনেক না বলা অনুভূতি বাঙ্ময় হয়ে আছে। তাঁর অভিযাত্রায় মিশ্রিত হয়েছে নাগরিকতা, আভিজাত্য এবং হর্ষ। চেনা জগৎকে শিল্পিত প্রকরণ দিয়ে তিনি উজ্জ্বল করেছেন। এই সবের মধ্য দিয়ে তিনি যে সৃজন উৎকর্ষের পরিচয় দিয়েছেন, তা এই শিল্পীকে বিশিষ্ট করে তুলেছে। দীপালি দীর্ঘদিনের শিল্পযাত্রায় নানা পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা করে একটি পথ নির্মাণ করেছেন। সামপ্রতিক চিত্রগুচ্ছেও নানা ভাবনা ও শিল্পবোধ পরিস্ফুট হয়েছে। স্মৃতির জীর্ণ পাতা সরব হয়ে উঠেছে। স্মৃতিকে রোমন্থন করে বয়ন করেছেন ও নির্মাণ করেছেন এক সৌন্দর্য পরম নিষ্ঠায় ও মমতায়।
