Baseer: An Eloquent Mind

You are cordially invited to view the exhibition titled ‘Baseer: An Eloquent Mind’ showcasing the works of one of the most influential modern artists of Bangladesh. Murtaja Baseer (1932 – 2020) had established a remarkable command of almost every style and genre of painting throughout his distinguished career, which spanned nearly seven decades. Ranging from tender portraits to visceral abstracts, lucid figurative to monumental murals; this exhibition is a showcase of Baseer’s astonishing reach. The show is designed along the spine of a long space, and devotes itself to an extensive extract from Baseer’s encyclopaedic archival project, which reflects his deep interest in eastern traditions and western experimentations in modern art. The archive is comprised of a collection of photographs, letters, sketches, collages, posters and paper cuttings; all of which he had collected and researched for his works throughout his career. The exhibition includes key paintings from several private collections, many of which are being publicly exhibited for the very first time. We hope that ‘Baseer: An Eloquent Mind’ will grant us comprehension into Murtaja Baseer’s compelling but unconventional approach to ‘abstract realism’.
