Anup Barua son of late Shashadhar Barua & late Nilima Barua born at Chittagong, Bangladesh , is one of the finest vocalists in Bangladesh today. With his classical virtuosity and passion for music, he has developed a distinct style that reflects a unique blend of depth and resonance. “His velvety voice effortlessly flows between highs and lows of the octave; creating a mahol (ambience) that is used to describe sub-continental music”. Like his renditions of Nazrulgeeti, his folk, modern Bengali songs, gazals, and thumris are also highly appreciated by music lovers.
Anup’s classical training started under Ustad Nirad Baran Barua at a very early age. At the age of 14, he became a national champion in classical music and received the Gold Medal from the President of Bangladesh. In addition to receiving numerous 1st Place awards in Nazrulgeeti and classical music, he was a three-time Gold Medal recipient in several music competitions ( ‘81,’82 & ’83) in the country. He later attended Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Delhi and Mumbai on a scholarship by the Government of India and earned the prestigious “Sangeet Visharad” degree. To further refine his skills, Anup continues his training in Kirana Gharana under Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan.
Anup worked as the head of the classical department at Chhayanaut and worked as the classical instructor at Bengal Foundation , Dhaka,Bangladesh since 2003. He also taught at Shilpakala Academy and worked as one of the audition judges as well as a trainer of the much hyped Closeup 1, 2005 (a nationwide musical talent search) organized by Unilever Bangladesh Ltd. and NTV. He is also an audition judge for Closeup 1, 2008. Besides teaching, Anup directed the music in Meher Nigar, a drama by Kazi Nazrul Islam, broadcasted by Ekushe TV, composed title music of Mastarda Surjosen, a weekly drama serial currently being broadcasted by ATN Bangla, and Shei Hashi, Shei Mukh, a drama broadcasted by BTV.
The versatile singer, Anup has performed in numerous music festivals arranged by Shuddha Sangeet Prasar Gosthi, Chhayanaut , Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy as well as in special programs like Fete de la Musique 2007 at Alliance Francaise, Shoto Borsher Bangla Gan organized by Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation (2008) and so on. In addition, he was invited to perform in Japan (Nagano Matsuri, 1992), USA (FOBANA 2005), Beijing (by China World Music Association in 2007), and Paris (by the Government of France in 2007). His album of Nazrulgeeti Jago Kholo Go Ankhi, with Amit Bandopadhyay’s music direction is considered “one of the most impressive recent audio productions. The album features the diverse genres in Nazrul songs -- kabyo geeti, raag pradhan, bhatiyali, Islami and baul -- in all their glory. " Music composition is slick, yet true to the roots” - The Daily Star, Dhaka. Anup also performed in Banga Sammelan 2008 in Toronto, Canada.
From 2009 to 2012, he has executed some of his finest renditions at the Suddho Sangeet Utshob at Chhayanaut Sangskriti Bhaban, and also featured on many programs aired on satellite channels in the country. During recent times, he was given the responsibilty to judge the auditions of a number of national talent hunt shows such as Channel I Shera Kantha, Channel I Khude Gaanraj and Bangladesh Idol by SATV.
This year, an album comprising of modern songs of his, titled “Hridoy Nodi”, was released under the well renonwned label, Laser Vision.
